Latest Phishing Scams in Australia – Christmas Edition
As we approach Christmas many fraudsters have been ramping up their efforts to catch more unsuspecting consumers with complex phishing scams.
A key issue with the some of latest scams is how users are educated to protect themselves. Users are often reminded to look out for unpersonalised communication or emails that lack the relevant context. (eg. If you aren’t expecting a parcel, assume that an email may be a fraud). During the Christmas period this becomes even harder as more transactions are happening and it’s fairly common that people would be having at least one parcel delivery each week.
The great thing about Peerkey‘s technology is users can verify branded emails and you can stay on top of scams shortly after your customers verify them.

With many people transacting with their credit card throughout Black Friday, Boxing Day and the lead up to Christmas, one could easily be confused by the National Australia Bank (NAB) email below. The email is personalised with the client’s name and has utilised the NAB branding. NAB recommends forwarding these emails to [email protected] and then deleting them from your email.

Fake Telstra Email
Just when you think you may have had a bad day receiving a $520.85 bill, you may be up for a lot more if you ended up inputting your card details! Another email that has utilised the Telstra branding as well as a personalised email. Telstra has a form on their website to report these fraudulent emails. Telstra also has a reference guide for some of the steps users can take to ensure they may be able to spot these phishing emails.

“Parcel Delivery Centre” Email
The email below shows a typical parcel scam where the targeted individual has a personalised email. A lot of these emails are typically branded but in this case it is rather generic.

Peerkey wishes our readers all the best over the holiday break and to watch out for problematic SMS, calls and emails.
